Desert Sentinels (white clay components)

Desert Sentinels (white clay components)

After several visits to Plaza Blanca in Abiquiu, New Mexico and The Black Place in the Lybrook Badlands, I felt compelled to make a large, multi-faceted sculptural work I call Desert Sentinels. My hope was to convey in clay the indescribable beauty and mystery of these desolate places as others have done before me, most notably the painter Georgia O’Keeffe and the photographers Ken Sullins and Walter Nelson. Desert Sentinels has approximately twenty-five stoneware and saggar-fired components along with some stones collected from the sites.
